Inspirational
Entry is free, the staff is welcoming and efficient and the exhibits “inspirational.” The museum is well laid out and the experience of ocean racing is brought to life by outstanding photographs and modern interactive displays. Many visitors are so impressed they return for a second and even third look – including those with little interest in sailing.
The Volvo Ocean Race began as the “Whitbread Round the World Race” in 1973, the name later changing to the Volvo Ocean Race in 2001. The event is documented with historical photographs and audio narration.
Technology
The complicated technology utilized by talented and highly professional sailors as they take part in one of the world’s most challenging ocean races is described in easy-to-understand terminology and interactive installations. Children love trying out the many “hands-on” gadgets that simulate the excitement of competition sailing.
Part of the activities include a free, interactive and awe-inspiring trip through part of an ocean race at the helm of a 60-foot racing yacht. A winner for things to do in Alicante – unbeatable!
Of particular interest in the newly installed “Black Pearl”, the Disney-sponsored 21.5-metre Volvo Class Open 70 with a 31.5-metre mast, its hull depicting a giant black squid on a red background – every child’s fantasy of piracy and adventure!
Life on Board
Life on deck is portrayed through games and interactive resources that simulate life on board a Volvo Open 70, and additional installations educate visitors about marine ecosystems mankind’s threat to the survival of deep sea habitats. Not forgetting the stars of the Volvo Ocean Race, with its racing heroes profiled in detail.
The Control Room – the fascinating Operation Centre – demonstrates how the race is expertly managed and where weather and safety information is centralised and processed.
How to Find It
By car the AP-7 motorway connects to Alicante city from the north or via the A-31 from Madrid. In the city take either the Avenida de Villjoyosa or the Autovia de Alicante to Alicante Port where there is a choice of car parking facilities.

A Great Day Out
For anyone looking for things to do in Alicante the Museo de Volvo Ocean Race is a great hit with the whole family. There is a museum store selling souvenirs and on the first floor a multipurpose space accommodating workshops and a café – with great views of the harbour.
