Bilbao Airport is conveniently located around ten minutes by car to the City of Bilbao and is increasing in popularity due to the growth in numbers of people who wish to explore more of Spain than just the beaches and bars of the Costas.

The airport carries around five million passengers each year with a mix of domestic flights and is a popular hub for those wishing to explore the Basque country, the Northern coasts of Spain and the dramatic coastlines and fresh green countryside of Cantabria, Asturias and of course those who wish to take a road trip and visit both Spain and France during their holidays.

Bilbao airport is very close to the City of Bilbao which in itself is a popular vibrant place to enjoy a holiday or weekend break. The journey time by car from Bilbao airport to Bilbao is around 10 minutes meaning you will soon be at your destination after landing at the airport.

Bilbao Tourist Information

The location of Bilbao airport is convenient for so many. Located between Santander on the North Coast of Spain and San Sebastian close to the French border, anyone flying into Bilbao has easy access to the whole region.

Of course, if you are flying to Bilbao airport, whilst you may have plans to travel and explore the wider area, we do recommend spending some time in the City of Bilbao which is the most cosmopolitan of the towns in the region and continually evolving and developing. During the industrial revolution Bilbao, with it´s famous shipping port was a hub of activity and the steel industry grew rapidly but by the 1970´s the area had sunk into a deep economic crisis and when people thought of Bilbao they thought of old warehouses and factories that had long since ceased trading.

A plan was devised and the City was regenerated with the old factories torn down and new infrastructure and growth really began. Now, Bilbao is a sophisticated area, buzzing with action and offers a fantastic City break. Once there, take a trip to the Bilbao Tourist Information office to find out the secrets of the City and some of the things you can do but you can´t miss a few firm favourites.

Visit the Guggenheim museum which is as spectacular outside as the exhibits inside and is one of many museums. The Casco Viejo (Old Town) which is known as the “7 streets” which date back to medieval times and enjoy the vast array of bars and taverns. Relax by the river and sample the local Basque cuisine after a walk along the Gran Via visiting the shops and sights or enjoy a boat trip along the river.
