Mazarron is the place to be from 4th to 8th December as the town celebrates the Fiesta of the Virgen de la Purisima, Mazarron’s most popular Spanish fiesta.

Virgen de la Purisima Mazarron

The traditions that are re-enacted at this time every year go way back to 1565 when Our Lady of the Conception took her place in the local chapel. The legend is that the Virgin wasted no time and set to work protecting the town from misfortune, even working miracles to save the community from a vicious pirate raid in 1585 at Bolnuevo: the church there marks the event.

A Great Show

The town’s imaginations runs wild at this time of year and there is plenty of entertainment ranging from sporting events to musical concerts, and much of it is free. Mazarron puts on a great show over the four days culminating on 8th December as the Virgin is paraded on her annual tour through the streets. In the afternoon the celebrations become less solemn with colourful floats, marching bands and wonderful costumes!

Cultural offerings include folk music and dancing, Flamenco performances and classical orchestrations. Or if you prefer something a little livelier there are pop concerts – something for everyone!

Try all the fun of the fair and take a ride on one of the main attractions set up especially for the fiesta, or enjoy a selection of local delicacies from the many food and drink stalls. There are organised picnics, fancy dress competitions, a popular Christmas Market selling gifts, crafts and festive treats and loads for children to see and do. And a large party tent is set up so activities may continue regardless of the weather that can be cool at this time of year.

The Spanish fiesta celebrations come to a crescendo with a magnificent firework event that draws spectators from far and wide, one of the best and not to be missed.

Varied Accommodation

You can make an enjoyable holiday out of the fiesta activities and there are plenty of hotels and B&B’s in the town offering comfortable accommodation as well as a number of self-catering apartments for rent.

Getting There

Mazarron is around 40 minutes’ easy drive from the city of Murcia – 68km via the A-7. Or you can take the ‘scenic route’ – 80km via the A-30 and the AP-7. As with all fiestas in Spain it’s a good idea not to park your Drivalia car hire too close to the centre of the action at fiesta time as you may not be able to get out so easily!

From the Drivalia Car Rental depot Alicante Airport the town is just over an hour and 15 minutes in clear traffic: 133km on the A-7 following the signs for Murcia and Mazarron.

There are plenty of car parks dotted around the town and there are taxis galore if you feel you’d like to partake in a drink or two to toast the traditional Spanish fiesta celebrations.
