A world of watersports
La Manga is a long and narrow sandy strip, never more than 1200 metres wide. It extends for 22 kilometres up from Cape Palos in the south. On the eastern side is the Mediterranean and to the west are the calm waters of colorgreen the Mar Menor lagoon. This large and shallow body of water has high salinity and the gentle currents afforded by the protection of La Manga puts it among the safest places in Europe for water-based activities.

It’s also a sailing hotspot, holding regattas in May and December. For holidaymakers hoping to discover their nautical side a giant range of packages and rentals are on offer for sailors of all abilities.
A polished golfing experience
To golf fans La Manga means one of Spain’s most prestigious courses, but there are more affordable options all across the Mar Menor area as well. The year-round fair weather makes it an all season destination and it would be possible to spend a whole week here playing golf every day and never taking on the same course twice. The famous and award-winning La Manga Club is open to the public and has three immaculate courses, as well as all the facilities and practice spaces required of a high-end club. Other pro-level sports facilities are also provided, including tennis courts and football pitches.
The golf courses at Torre-Pacheco, Roda and Serena are all close to Mar Menor, so there’s no end of choice for serious players. A more casual round can be had at Veneziola, where there’s a nine-hole pitch & putt. For scenery you’ll have undulating, pine-clad hills and the endless azure expanse of the Mediterranean to inspire you.
Beaches galore
There are three Blue Flag beaches in the La Manga region alone. On the southern side of the strip is Playa Galúa, a bay with golden sands and lots of shallow water for kids to splash around in. Not far from there and open to the Mediterranean on the beautiful Cape Palos is Playa de Levante, which has livelier surf and is favoured by watersports enthusiasts. Further up are Marchmalo and Banco del Tabal, both with tranquil waters and sitting in front of high-rise developments home to shops and restaurants.
Relax and be pampered
In balance with all the breathless action of La Manga’s sporty side is a dedication to the finer things in life. There’s a range of modern day spas and resorts right along the strip and around Mar Menor. Book a massage or splash out on the classic range of beauty and health treatments. Some people eschew the formalities of a spa trip and head straight to the source of the region’s reputation for health tourism. Mar Menor is celebrated for its mineral-rich waters and at Lo Pagan bathers smother themselves with the salubrious clay and then sit in the sun for a while to dry off in the sunshine.
